As a granting committee VSA Michigan-Dearborn raises money for arts projects and artist residencies in the Dearborn community. For example, in 2008, funds made available to Howe Elementary were used to explore a yearlong project recognizing the school’s six core values: Honesty, Integrity, Courtesy, Cooperation, Citizenship, and Responsibility. Students first worked with their instructors to investigate the meanings of these words and how they could be represented through art. At the end of the year, Demetrio Aguilar of Oaxaca, Mexico travelled to Dearborn as an artist in residence and intensively mentored the students. The young artists and Aguilar worked to create ceramic tile murals based on the six values. This project is now permanently on display in the halls of Howe Elementary.

Funding for this project was made by possible by VSA Michigan, the Dearborn Community Arts Council, the Dearborn Education Foundation, and the Dearborn Rotary Club.

VSA Michigan-Dearborn is also actively involved with the Dearborn Commission on Disability Concerns and participates in the annual disability day to bring awareness to the impact of the arts on people with disabilities.
