VSA Michigan-Detroit works closely with city and suburban schools to provide artists in residency for non-arts classrooms. Teaching artists collaborate with classroom educators in developing arts-infused curriculum for diverse audiences. Residencies utilize the visual arts, dance, theatre, music, and literature to effectively create holistic learning environments. VSA Michigan-Detroit partners with special education and general education classrooms to promote the Universal Design for Learning.

After school, high school youth have the opportunity to participate in the state developed artsJAM program model. In this unique program, students are mentored by professional artists to enhance the creative process and develop pre-vocational skills. Currently, this multidisciplinary arts program is hosted in Detroit’s Northend and Osborn communities. These programs are specifically designed for youth with learning, emotional, physical, and cognitive disabilities.
